LSE Library was conceived as a laboratory for the social sciences in 1896. The Library would provide a place where people interested in the study and understanding of society could come together and find the materials for their work. The dynamic pursuit of this vision has built one of the most outstanding social science libraries in the world.

We hold extensive collections on British political and economic history, including archives of influential political parties, pressure groups, think tanks, politicians and campaigners. Particular strengths are peace and internationalism, women’s equality and LGBT equality.

LSE Library has been home to the Hall-Carpenter Archives since 1988. It’s an extensive collection of archives, ephemera and printed material documenting the development of gay activism in the UK since the 1950s.

We are preparing work around an exhibition and events programme for 2020 on the formation of the Gay Liberation Front and Women’s Liberation Movement. We would be particularly interested in hearing from or about people involved in the liberation struggles in the late 1960s and 1970s.
