Founded in 1877, the National Museum of Ireland (NMI) holds in its care 12,000 years of Ireland’s portable heritage and its natural history and is responsible for the preservation and conservation of the portable heritage of the nation, and to provide public access to the national collections, educate and raise awareness of our culture and history, and undertake academic research.

Throughout the later 20th Century the key needs of the Museum were the acquisition of sufficient space for the exhibition and storage of its collections and the provision of the necessary staff to curate and care for the collections and to provide adequate public services. In September 1997 the National Museum of Ireland – Decorative Arts & History opened in Collins Barracks.

For the very first time the National Museum of Ireland, will host the 2020 OUTing the Past Festival. NMI recently unveiled new artefacts that define some of the most memorable moments in the LGBTI+ movement in Ireland in recent years, the Museum also launched a new trail throughout its Collins Barracks site highlighting noteworthy members of the LGBTI+ community from early history to the current day.

Stay tuned for a full programme of this free and engaging day, celebrating LGBTI+ History.
