1.15pm - Welcome to the OUTing the Past Festival – Alex McLeman & Pierrette Squires
1.30pm - Dr Rainer Schulze – Reclaiming the link with the Past
In this presentation, we will uncover links from the past, including persecution of LGBT+ people under the Nazi regime through to the “AIDS crisis” of the 1980s to the present, creating an awareness of past struggles which continue to cast a long shadow on LGBT+ lives until today.
2pm - Carl Austin -Behan OBE - RAF to Mr Gay UK to Lord Mayor of Manchester and LGBT+ Activist
Carl is a local LGBT icon with a fascinating past. He was discharged from the RAF due to his sexuality, then became the first openly gay person to join Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service. He also won the award of Mr Gay UK and was elected first openly Gay Lord Mayor of Manchester before being appointed as the LGBT Advisor to Andy Burnham - The Mayor of Greater Manchester. Carl was also appointed to be a Deputy Lieutenant of The County of Greater Manchester. Then to top it off he was awarded an OBE in the 2020 Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for services to Charity, LGBTQ+ Equality and to the Community across Greater Manchester.
2.30pm - Rosie Adamson Clark – Women’s Stories
Rosie is an inspiring writer and has been exploring hidden LGBT+ stories by creating a series of short films. This project has been recommended by actress Maxine Peake as inspirational and poignant. During this presentation we will be screening “Nan to the Rescue” - A teenager’s coming out story, in the 1980's, accepted and supported wholeheartedly, by the unlikely ally of Nan.

3.20pm - Sacha Coward – Space Invaders – The history of LGBT+ characters in videogames
Sacha Coward is a videogame fanatic and a queer historian. He has recently developed a set of videogame tours at the British Museum and he will share some of the history behind queer themes and representations in computer games.
3.50pm - Stephen M Hornby & Abi Hynes – Museum Monologues- Dramatising Bolton's LGBTQ+ Past
In 2019, Bolton Museum commissioned Inkbrew Productions to create five monologues from figures of the town's queer past, captured as short films. Stephen and Abi, writers of two of the pieces, will introduce a special screening of their films exploring the gender non-binary past of Vesta Tilley and Bolton's connection to queer poet Walt Whitman and take questions about their work.
4.30pm - Jen Yockney – 25 Years of Bi space & voice
Jen will reveal the of the story of the UK's longest-running bi support group - Biphoria, which marked its 25th birthday in September 2019. Bi history is often erased, and the histories of bi organising are less documented and told than those of Lesbian and Gay organisations and campaigns.
5pm - Paul Edmondson - The Bisexual voices of Shakespeare’s Sonnets
Arising from new research, Paul Edmondson from the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust will explore in what ways can Shakespeare’s Sonnets be considered a cornerstone bisexual text, and why is this empowering for our own times?
6pm - Filthy Shakespeare Performance

Filthy Shakespeare Company performance will be liberating centuries of LGBT+ censorship to enable Shakespeare to be experienced by new audiences.
By translating the original uncensored text with Drag Artists, Theatre Creatives and Academics we are enabling Shakespeare to finally go beyond its censorship.
This exciting immersive production will be staged in the Bolton History Gallery.
Performance recommended for ages 15+
