Outing The Past: LGBT+ People a in an Irish Free State
Weds 30 March 2022; 18:30 Online + In person
Speakers: Kieran Rose, LGBT+ activist and campaigner, Seán Kissane, Curator of Exhibitions at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Dublin and others.
Exploring the subject of ‘Outing the Past’, IMMA looks at the troubled histories of LGBT+ People during an Irish 'Free' State after Independence in 1922. This turbulent period in Irish history witnessed a concerted campaign by the new Irish State to police and repress same-sex desire, resulting in hundreds of gay men being incarcerated for homosexual offenses and same sex desires.
IMMA invites Kieran Rose LGBT+ activist to discuss his research as active member of the Department of Justice Working Group for the State to disregard of criminal convictions before gay law reform in 1993. Rose shares new archival research and draws attention to the experiences of those most impacted and the many who were forced to emigrate. Comprising short presentations and discussion, our guests address the continued legacy of these laws on lives of LGBT+ people and artist community, calling for the greater need to commemorate those who resisted some of the most inhospitable decades of the last century in Ireland, and to finally clear past criminal offenses that still exists in an individual's State records.
